5 Signs It's Time to Upgrade Your Phone or Tablet

A slow phone isn't always a dead phone — here's how to tell the difference before you spend money.

It's easy to assume a sluggish phone means it's time to buy a new one. Sometimes that's true. Often, though, a few simple fixes (clearing storage, updating software, replacing an aging battery) can buy another year or two. Here's how to tell which situation you're actually in.

1. Software updates have stopped coming

Every phone and tablet manufacturer eventually stops providing security updates for older models. Once that happens, you're increasingly exposed to security risks with each passing month, regardless of how the device otherwise performs. This is one of the few signs on this list that can't be fixed with a setting change — it's a genuine reason to consider upgrading.

2. The battery can't make it through a normal day

All rechargeable batteries degrade with age and charge cycles. If your device needs a midday top-up just to get through routine use — well below what it could handle a year or two ago — that's a sign of real wear. A battery replacement is often cheaper than a full upgrade and worth considering first.

3. Apps crash or freeze regularly, even after a restart

Occasional slowdowns are normal. Frequent crashing, especially after you've cleared storage and restarted the device, often points to hardware that's genuinely struggling to keep up with current software demands.

4. You're missing features you actually need

Camera quality, storage capacity, or connectivity standards that matter for your day-to-day use are reasonable, practical reasons to upgrade — separate from how "slow" the device feels.

5. Repair costs approach the price of a new device

If a cracked screen, battery replacement, or other repair quote comes in close to the cost of a new or refurbished device, it's worth comparing both options directly rather than defaulting to the repair.

Before you buy anything

Try the free fixes first: clear out unused apps and files, make sure the device is fully updated, and restart it. If the issues above persist after that, it's a reasonable time to start shopping.
